Try to refrain from performing Printer Firmware Updates unless it becomes necessary for troubleshooting reasons. Under normal circumstances, Firmware would be considered a good thing as it updates functions and parameters that the hardware can perform, often improving function. However, Printer Firmware in conjunction with the use of Compatible Cartridges can be a troublesome duo as some Firmware upgrades specifically target the functionality and reading of data from compatible cartridges. Firmware updates can lock the printer from use of compatible cartridges, forfeiting choice and options in the process. Through design or happenstance this is becoming common occurrence within the print industry.

Power Off Theory -- is a very effective procedure, ridding unwanted bugs in reading correct data from cartridge. It’s effectively a heavy reset and works wonders, definitely worthwhile in deploying as the go to first step in troubleshooting.
Firmware is the Software which is installed on the Hardware (“Software for Hardware”), for example the Firmware of a printer is the software which controls/instructs the printer on how to perform certain functions. Examples are as; how fast it prints, when to take paper in, when to eject paper, when and where to print, basically anything the printer undertakes is instructed by Firmware!
Printer firmware updates are renowned to have their Ink Monitoring or Cartridge Recognition systems tweaked so that current compatible, refill or remanufactured cartridges are no longer recognised (more specifically the chip found on the cartridge). This may not be the case with every Firmware Update, but if a firmware update is undertaken the recognition of the pre-working compatibles is at risk. If for some reason a Firmware Update is undertaken this causes issues with the compatible cartridge, then unfortunately the removal or reversal of the update generally can’t be done in a safe manner (as it is extremely risky and is not advised).
With this in mind, the newer machines are subject to this eternal battle between Firmware and Chip recognition with every update.
